Martin Lewis issues MOT warning to drivers urging millions to check now

Earlier this year MOT extensions were introduced due to the coronavirus crises.

The six month extension was introduced by the DVSA and was available on all MOTs that were due between March 30 and July 30.

However, the first wave of extensions are now coming to an end following lockdown and more than 11 million drivers are being urged to check their vehicles.

Money saving expert, Martin Lewis, has said motorists who were granted a six-month extension should act now to avoid missing the deadline, reports The Mirror.

Your deadline will be six months from when your initial MOT was due.

If your MOT was due in July it would have been extended to January 2021.

But for car checks that were due at the start of lockdown, they will be approaching the new deadline.

So if yours was due on April 2, you will have to book it by October 2.

MOT tests were made mandatory again in the UK on August 1.

Speaking at the time, Martin said: "If your MOT is due on or after 1 August, it's business as usual.

"Yet for MOTs due between 30 March and 31 July, you automatically have six months added on top, eg, 24 July becomes 24 January 2021."

If your car's MOT was due up to or on July 31, it would be automatically extended by six months.

It's best to check now though to avoid a penalty and ensure your vehicle is safe.
