Martin Lewis issues last-minute warning to holidaymakers on This Morning

Money expert Martin Lewis has revealed his top tips and tricks to save cash for holidaymakers as people prepare to go away this summer.

What seems like a cheap deal can soon add up once you start to include luggage, seat selection and airport parking.

Don't panic though - MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis is on hand to save you and your family hundreds of pounds reports the Liverpool Echo.

Is your hotel cheaper now?

While on This Morning, Martin told holidaymakers who booked using a travel agent or directly with the hotel to check to see if the price is now cheaper.

If it is and you have free cancellation - cancel, then immediately rebook.

Sitting together on a flight - it's all about timing

According to Martin most airlines will always try to seat groups on the same booking together - but this is what you need to do - check in online as early as possible, you will get to sit with the rest of your group (providing the seats are available).

  • British Airways - 24 hours before
  • Easyjet - 30 days before
  • Emirates - 48 hours before
  • Flybe – 36 hours before
  • Jet 2 - 28 days before
  • Norwegian - 24 hours before
  • Thomas Cook - 24 hours before
  • Tui - 7 days before
  • Virgin - 24 hours before

These are the best times - but don't forget there are no guarantees.

Showing your boarding pass

There’s no legal or security requirement for you to show your boarding pass in any airport shop, with the exception of duty free.

If you are travelling outside of the European Union (your boarding pass proves this) the shop can reclaim the VAT paid which is why they ask.

Avoid rip-off airport drop-off charges

19 out of the 30 airports in the UK - including big ones like Luton, Manchester and Edinburgh charge for a 10-minute drop-off at the terminal.

Rather than paying almost all airports, have a free alternative area for drop-offs so it's worth walking the 15 minutes or taking a shuttle to save those pounds.
