Martin Lewis issues holiday coronavirus guide for travellers

The coronavirus outbreak has left many questioning whether it's worth planning a trip abroad this summer.

Travel bans are in place in much of Northern Italy with some 16 million people under quarantine, and the virus has hit many popular holiday destinations.

The UK Government has advised against all but essential travel to some parts of Italy.

There have been over 100,000 cases confirmed worldwide so far, with the number expected to continue growing.

So will it be safe to travel abroad this summer?

Financial journalist and money-saving expert Martin Lewis has said there are three questions to ask yourself before planning a holiday, Glasgow Live reported.

  • How far away is the trip?
  • Would you be disinclined to travel?
  • Are you vulnerable to coronavirus?

The co-founder of the popular MoneySavingExpert website said: "It's still early in the Covid-19 outbreak, so uncertainty is rife.

"It's plausible this will have a substantial impact on world health, travel and the economy across 2020."

He wrote that we all need to "hope for the best and plan for the worst".

Lewis said that the further away the trip is the "trickier" the situation becomes, however he said if you planned to travel somewhere with a limited number of confirmed cases, then "there's less of a risk."

Perhaps the silver lining of the current situation is that "less demand may mean holiday prices drop."

"How would you feel about going to an area with growing Covid-19 cases, that isn't on the Foreign Office exclusion list?"

There are currently only a handful of destinations on this exclusion list, whilst there are confirmed cases in around 90 countries - which tourists can travel to at their own discretion.

He says that if you wouldn't go, "then the further away the trip, the more cautious you should be about booking now."
