ENERGY bills are set to rise again before this Christmas, Martin Lewis has warned.
The home finance journalist and TV pundit has warned that billpayers are set to face even higher charges by the end of the year, pointing to price predictions from three major energy companies.
The MoneySavingExpert.com founder tweeted: “The latest predictions from Eon, British Gas & EDF have just come out. All are up on a week ago when it was predicted [October] would stay roughly the same as now (we're now 1/3 of the way through the [October] cap assessment period).
“Much of this is on the back of the rise in energy wholesale prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.”
He said that current predictions pointed to a hike of between 1.6% to 2.8% in October, followed by a 1% increase in January and a 0.3% rise next April.
Lewis added: “Though the further out you go the more crystal ball gazing it is.”
Labour pledged to cut household energy bills before coming to power at last year’s election, sparking accusations that “the cost of living is out of control” under Keir Starmer.
SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said: “Under the Labour Government energy bills have already risen by £281, and the news that they are likely to rise a further three times in the next year shows the cost of living is out of control under the Labour Party.
“Voters are angry that Keir Starmer has failed to deliver the change he promised. The cost of living is rising, child poverty is soaring, the UK economy has been downgraded, public finances are in a worse state than when the Labour Party came to office, and families are feeling the pinch as Labour Party austerity cuts squeeze household incomes.
“The Prime Minister must come to parliament, apologise to voters – and outline exactly when bills will start falling and what action he will take to ensure they do.”
