Martin Lewis issues advice to anyone with a mobile phone

Martin Lewis has issued advice to anyone with an old mobile phone.

The Money Saving Expert founder was back on TV screens this week with another busy edition of his Money Show Live.

And this time it was all about protecting your pocket and the planet.

During the show, the consumer champion shared several ways to reduce your energy costs while doing your bit to save the environment.

But during the episode, Martin gave some advice that may surprise the millions of people across the UK who own a mobile phone - especially those with an old handset sitting at the back of a drawer.

Some of us may be guilty of getting a shiny new smartphone only to quickly disregard the old one without any thought.

So Martin had some important information for those people, the Daily Record reports.

He said: "If you’ve got an old mobile handset do not throw it away as it is terrible for the environment - batteries, lead, beryllium, flame retardants could all cause environmental harm if you chuck it away and it goes into landfill."

Not only that, the financial guru revealed that selling your old phone could actually boost your bank balance by as much as £180.

"Get yourself on to a comparison site like sellmymobile.com and compareandrecycle.co.uk and see if you can flog it," he encouraged.

While the price you get offered will depend on the age of your phone and the condition it’s in, Martin said older iPhones can fetch up to £150 and Samsung handsets up to £180.

"Relatively, not that new iPhones and Samsung's can be worth up to £180," he explained.

"I’d also check eBay as well, if you’re on it, because you might be able to sell it for more there but these are the easiest ways to do it."

However, he did issue a warning before you go digging through your drawers: "Not much protection with these sites though so do check reviews and once you send it to them they might say ‘there’s a scratch on it so we’re not giving you as much’, but still, it’s far better than binning it."
