Martin Lewis gives £50,000 after worried single mum gets in touch

Martin Lewis has donated thousands of pounds after what he described as a "depressing" TV phone-in.

The finance guru appeared on ITV's This Morning on Thursday to take calls from people "at crisis point". Mr Lewis joined Alison Hammond and Phillip Schofield for a segment highlighting the cost of living crisis.

Martin gave all the advice he could for those worrying about their budgets ahead of the energy price rise next month. One woman, Pippa, said she is a single mum who works part time.

She said: "I'm getting increasingly worried about how I'm going to manage with the increase in prices of everything. I receive Universal Credit as well as a top up but that isn't rising in line with inflation."

Martin suggested she talked to Citizens Advice to see if she can get any extra benefits. He also said she could assess all her bills and see how she could downsize at the supermarket, as well as using an online money makeover tool.

Afterwards, a frustrated Martin took to Twitter to say how "bl**dy depressing" his time on the show had been. He said "so many people [are] at crisis point" before adding: "I am nearly OUT OF TOOLS to help. Govt must intervene."

A Leeds-based charity replied to his tweet to explain it was "at breaking point" trying to help the rising number of people in crisis. Money Buddies said it had seen twice as many people than expected in February and again in March. The tweet continued: "The state must intervene now".

Martin Lewis responded by asking whether £50,000 would help to "get things in place" for the charity. He then said the money was "ready to go" and that he would try to get it to them "today" (Thursday).

The Money Saving Expert founder's many followers rushed to praise his generosity. Christina Maroc said: "What a fine man you are Martin", while Russell B said: "Can someone make this man PM?"

Sylvia Simpson, who runs Money Buddies, said a "HUGE" thanks to Martin as she spoke of the charity's "exceptional demand".

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV and the ITV Hub
