Martin Lewis gets emotional as he shares 'grave' concerns over cost of living crisis

Martin Lewis got emotional as he shared his 'grave' concerns about the rise in the cost of living.

The energy price cap is set to rise to £1971 a year on April 1 and the Money Saving Expert appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain today to help people with their questions in a cost of living special.

He then headed next door to Lorraine to speak to the host about the crisis facing many people, as they choose between heating their home or getting to have a good meal.

Martin has been nicknamed the People's Shadow Chancellor and Lorraine quizzed him on what he'd do if he was in power.

Asked what he would do if he was in charge of the country's finances, he said: "I would be giving a lot more money to people who are vulnerable, especially people with disabilities who have to use more electricity and water.

"People are in a genuinely devastating situation at the moment and I worry some people won’t get through."

He is worried about how people will cope with the huge increase in energy prices.

"I am gravely concerned about the situation that many people will face over the next 12 months," he explained.

"And one of the problems we have is that a lot of the tools we have for the people with the least income, they are predicated on the idea that you have your income and your expenditure.

"The way that this works is reduce people’s expenditure to below their income. We have got to the stage where for many people that is simply not possible no matter what we do and that is why I have been calling for political intervention."

Martin also has his own money show (ITV)

He has been trying to help people by keeping things around the energy price cap rise as simple as possible.

"The cheapest fix right now on the market is £2880, which is actually more than the prediction of the October price cap (currently at £2490+) so it isn't worth getting a fix today. It's just not worth it," he said on Good Morning Britain today.

"Stick on the price cap. What you do need to watch out for is though, does your firm - because there are no open market ones here, comparison sites are gone for the minute - ever offer you a much cheaper fix deal."
