Martin Lewis forced to delete tweet about daughter after being targeted by ‘horrible’ trolls

Martin Lewis was forced to delete a Twitter post after trolls piled on and accused the financial expert of lying about his daughter.

The MoneySavingExpert founder shared a sweet exchange that he had had with nine-year-old Sapphire about politics on Wednesday evening. But he later took the post down after an onslaught of replies from trolls suggested he had made the conversation up.

Martin and his wife Lara Lewington, a former 5 News weather presenter, welcomed the birth of their daughter in 2012, and the proud dad often shares stories about Sapphire on his Twitter account - calling her ‘mini MSE’. But he had strong words for fellow Twitter users after receiving a backlash to his latest anecdote about his daughter.

After deleting the tweet, Martin said: “Twitter really is a horrible place sometimes. I tweeted a nice little comment about my little girl, only to get lots of @_DHOTYA (Didn’t Happen of the Year Award) replies.

“Why would I bother making something like that up. I was proud of her,” he added. “I've deleted it, as I can't be bothered with people who want to ruin it.”

The original tweet from Martin read: “Just been blown away by mini MSE (aged 9). I asked her if she knew what the government’s job is.

“She simply replied: ‘the government’s job is to help shape the country.’ Brilliant and succinct,” he praised.

Many of Martin’s fans rushed to support the expert with a flurry of encouraging replies. “Don’t let the haters get you down, Martin - they’re sad, small-minded people with small lives. You do so much for so many people and we appreciate and value you,” one person wrote in a kind message.

The Didn’t Happen of the Year Awards account, which exposes ‘exaggerated’ posts from social media users, even waded in themselves. They said: “Didn’t see the post - but if anybody has ever earned immunity from DHOTYA this year it's Martin Lewis.”
