Martin Lewis fan shares microwave trick to reduce your energy bills amid cost of living crisis

Financial guru Martin Lewis has been offering advice to people who have been hit hard by the rising cost of living.

As energy prices soar by 54 per cent, many are concerned about how they will make ends meet.

Martin has been pleading with the UK Government to intervene and offer more support as he says he is inundated with emails from people who are 'desperate' for help.

As a stark reminder of how many people will be struggling, Martin and the team behind Money Saving Expert has created a 'cost of living crisis survival guide'.

This comes as the rate of inflation hit seven per cent in March, the highest it's been in 30 years.

Food, fuel and energy prices will hit millions of homes and a survey from Advice Direct Scotland says 70 per cent of Scots are worried about affording energy bills.

In MSE cost of living guide, he gave tips and advice that have been shared by his own fans and the MSE team.

In amongst 'heat the human, not the home' the advice, one fan pointed out that he uses his microwave to keep costs down.

Paul said: "Might seem stupid but jacket potatoes. Instead of picking them and sticking them in the oven for an hour and a half. Prick them microwave for five to ten minutes until soft inside then oven them for 20 minutes to crisp up the outside. Saves the cost of oven being in for ages".

To which Money Saving Expert explains that also microwaves are high wattage, they are used for less time and estimate you save 25 per cent of energy using a microwave for cooking a potato rather than an oven.

And another MSE follower, Fran, urged readers: "Shorten your wash cycles, use the rapid wash on your machine and not the longer ones."

She also added you should do washing in the day, to allow the sun to dry them on the line.

MSE then added that using your machine on a 30-degree cycle and only using it when it is full of laundry, can save about £28 a year on your energy bill, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

And as for tumble dryers, Uswitch research has discovered families are spending over £100 a year on tumble dryers.

Uswitch also reckons you could be wasting £87 on refilling a kettle, and boiling it with far more water than you need.

Martin Lewis said: "On April 1, the 54 per cent rise in the energy price cap hit 22 million homes, a desperate, typical £700 per year increase – catastrophic for those with the lowest incomes.

"Yet the pain stretches far further – when combined with all the other price rises, we will see a material drop in the standard of living for most on low to middle incomes."
