Martin Lewis fan explains how they got 25% council tax discount and £600 refund

One Martin Lewis fan shared how she managed to get a £600 council tax rebate after following the Money Saving Expert's advice.

Karen wrote in to the MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) team and her success was shared in this week's newsletter.

She told the team that she was paying council tax for her daughter who was a full-time student and didn't realise she was eligible for a 25% discount because of this.

In England, full time students are exempt from paying council tax and are classed as being "disregarded".

You can get a 25% discount if you live on your own, or if everyone else in your home - such as students - are disregarded.

Karen found out that she was able to get the discount by reading an MSE article.

She told the MSE team: "I got a £600 refund as I'd been paying council tax for my student daughter - thanks MSE.'

"I read your article on the 25% council tax discount you get if you only live with full-time students. I applied to my daughter's college to get proof she attended from 2020 to 2023, and sent this to my local authority.

"It's now refunding me over £600. Thank you so much for your help MSE."

To be classed as a full time student for council tax purposes, your course must last at least one calendar or academic year for at least 24 weeks out of the year.

It must also normally involve at least 21 hours of study, tuition or work experience per week during term time.

If you apply for this your local council usually will ask you for proof that you have a full time student living with you.

Like Karen, you can ask for a certificate from the university or college and they must provide it to you.

Households where everyone is a student are exempt from paying council tax at all.

If you receive a council tax bill, then you will need to contact your local authority and apply for your exemption.

There are lots of other circumstances where you might be eligible for a council tax discount - sometimes up to 100% off.
