Martin Lewis is one of the UK's biggest household names because of his financial advice and help in what are often desperate situations.

The Money Saving Expert founder also has a famous wife and he recently revealed he almost quit his job after thinking that there was no place for financial journalism on TV, Wales Online reports.

Here are some things Martin Lewis fans may not know about his life away from the world of money-saving.

Martin Lewis' wife

Although Martin keeps his life very private, we do know he is not the only famous face in his family. He is married to Lara Lewington who is a television presenter on the BBC's technology programme, Click.

Previously she was the Channel 5 news weather presenter from 2003 to 2009. The couple married almost 14 years ago on May 31, 2009 and share a daughter, Sapphire.

Last week, Lara unveiled a new radio documentary on Radio 4 and BBC Sounds, that explores artificial intelligence called A Documentary: By ChatGPT.

Martin Lewis' net worth

Martin established his successful website Money Saving Expert in 2003, after acquiring it for just £100. Almost 10 years later, he sold it to MoneySupermarket, in a move which earned him a whopping £87m.

Today, the financial guru is believed to be worth £123 million as reported by The Sunday Times Rich List in 2021.

Childhood, education and career

Martin grew up in Norley, Cheshire, around 30 miles away from Liverpool. His mum, Susan Lewis, died in a horse riding accident when Martin was just 11 years old.

He studied Government and Law at the London School of Economics and studied a postgraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Cardiff. After graduating, Martin became the general secretary for the LSE Students' Union and later worked for the Brunswick Group which is a financial communications consultancy.

After graduating in journalism at the University of Cardiff, Lewis became a producer for the BBC Business Unit working on the BBC Radio Five Live business programmes and as an editor of BBC Radio 4's Today programme business slot.

His work from there included writing for the Sunday Express, presenting Money Saving Expert slots on Channel 5 daytime show Open House with Gloria Hunniford, and as a business and personal finance reporter on BBC One's Breakfast News.

In February 2003 Martin Lewis created his website MoneySavingExpert.com. In September 2012 he sold the website to the Moneysupermarket.com group for up to £87m but remained editor-in-chief.

In July 2015 Lewis sold just over half his shareholding in Moneysupermarket.com, obtained in the sale of Money Saving Expert, for £25.2 million. He began presenting his show The Martin Lewis Money Show in 2012 and often appears on the ITV show This Morning to give finical advice.
