Martin Lewis explains when you don’t have the right to return goods

Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has advised shoppers on when they don’t have the right to return items.

The savings guru warned shoppers that in store purchases are more limited on giving consumers the right to return goods.

Martin was speaking to two people who had just bought an item of clothing in a store on the The Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV.

The shopper said: “We decided to go back for a refund, and they said no.”

Martin replied: “And they’re right.

“When you buy something in store, as opposed to online, you only have a right to a refund if the item is faulty.

The savings expert told two shoppers that they weren't entitled to a refund after an 'impulse buy' (ITV)

“The transaction crystallizes at the point of payment, so until that point you can always walk away.”

He added: “There is no cooling off period on retail transactions in stores, which is the reason I say ‘never buy something on impulse’.

“If they have a published returns policy, then that’s part of your contract.”

Speaking to another person who tried to return a present in store without a receipt, he said: “You don’t have a right to take goods back, unless they’re faulty if you bought them in store.

“The fact that they are allowing you to take it back with a receipt is generous.

“If they say you need a receipt, you need a receipt.

“This is important with the sales on because some stores that normally allow you to take things back can suspend that during the sales.”
