Martin Lewis explains what to to now to beat negative interest rates

Money saving expert Martin Lewis has just explained exactly what you need to do now to protect yourself from negative interest rates.

While it's never happened before in the UK, it's more and more likely - with the Bank of England telling high street lenders this week to share their plans for customers if rates drop below 0%.

And that means more and more people are growing concerned about their savings.

Martin's first point, however, was that it's not certain yet.

"The first thing to say is that it's 'if' [rates go negative] - very much if," he told viewers of ITV's Martin Lewis Money Show.

"I would say it is unlikely that would happen, but it is more plausible than it was before."

He added that negative rates also don't mean banks will start syphoning off money from your savings either.

"Even if that were to happen it doesn't mean savings rates, or certainly not all of them, would go negative - as they tend do be - the best ones at least - substantially higher than the Bank of England base rate."

The best thing you can do if you're worried is to act now.

"If they announce it you might be able to lock in on a fixed rate," Martin said.

"The important thing to understand is that there is a gravitational pull right now bringing savings rates down.

"We've seen NS&I drop, we've seen Marcus drop, we've seen others drop.

"So, if you are worried about that and you want certainty, what you do is you get a fixed savings rate that locks in you rate.

"You can't withdraw cash and it can't drop."

And the sooner the better.

"Don't wait until they drop, if you think that's plausible and it worries you, lock in now.

"Because if rates drop you won't be able to lock in as high."
