Martin Lewis explains simple way young drivers can save hundreds on car insurance

Car insurance can be crippling for young drivers, with the cost of it sometimes forcing them off the road.

But now money saving expert Martin Lewis has explained how they and other drivers can save hundreds of pounds.

Speaking on the Martin Lewis Money Show Martin said: "Cutting car insurance costs is less about common sense and more about small changes in your behaviour that can bring big price swings."

Martin's top tip was to avoid auto renewing your insurance and instead renew it 21 days before - reports Mirror Online.

Martin explained that the price drops from 35 days to 21 days, then rises again after.

The perfect window to renew is 20 to 26 days before.

He said: "It's not an exact science, but it shows how timing it can make a big difference for everyone.

"When it comes to car insurance, be the early bird who catches the worm."

Other tips Martin shared was that comprehensive cover can be cheaper than a third-party fire and theft policy. It's because by selecting the first option means insurers see you as lower risk.

And adding another driver can also help to cut costs - especially for younger drivers.

Martin said: "Adding an extra driver can cut your costs - it's especially useful for younger drivers.

"But never put them as the main driver as that's called "fronting" and counts as fraud."

Martin also said that you should try using different comparison sites, and said: "I use at least three."

That's because deals are done between sites and insurers - so the same insurance could be cheaper on one than another.

You also need to add in Direct Line and Aviva - as they don't appear on comparison sites - and if you have more than one car in your household check out the multi car deals available from Admiral, Aviva and LV as that's sometimes cheaper too.

Once you know the policy you want - Martin advised people to haggle, to see if their existing insurer will beat it.
