Martin Lewis explains how you can save money if you wear a uniform for work

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has explained how people who wear a uniform for work can save cash.

Speaking on the Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV, he said those wearing a uniform can claim tax relief on the cost of maintaining or washing their clothes. Most eligible people will be able to claim £12 a year based on an allowance of £60.

The financial guru told viewers: "Do you wear a uniform to work? Don't worry - I'm not chatting you up." He added: "You may be able to play a cash rebate if you wash or repair your work uniform yourself, even if it is just a branded T-shirt."

He further said: "The minimum allowance is £60 a year, so that's a £12 a year gain. It's not huge - it's the basic rate but you can double that at the higher rate. Don't pay anyone to reclaim this. It is really easy for you to do this yourself."

Firefighters can claim £16, dental nurses and healthcare assistants can claim £25, mechanics can receive £24, and pilots can receive £204, Mr Lewis said. His co-host Angellica Bell explained that one viewer - an electrical technician - reported 40 people at his work claimed the rebate and saved around £14,500 for the company, reports Birmingham Live.

Angellica said: "He is an electrician technician and he says none of his colleagues knew about the uniform tax. He told them about it and in total around 40 of them got it back. A company saving of around £14,500. Thanks, Martin!"
