Martin Lewis explains how you can get a free car check this winter

It took a while, but winter is now definitely here - and with that in mind Martin Lewis has explained how you can get a free car check.

While a Winter Car Check costs £15, the MoneySavingExpert.com founder explained a standard check is completely free and there's a second benefit too.

"You'll get a battery health check, headlight and brake light check, windscreen wipers and chip check, and an MOT due date reminder," Martin told viewers of Good Morning Britain.

The check only takes around 15 minutes and costs nothing - you don't even need to book in advance.

How to get it? Simply head to a Halfords store or Autocentre.

Martin also pointed out there's a second benefit if you've got an MoT coming up - as you can make sure you get things are working beforehand rather than fail later.

"They'll try and probably upsell you of course they will, that's how these things work," Martin warned.

"But you don't need to pay anything at all."
