Martin Lewis explains how to get £130 for free by simple switch

Martin Lewis has revealed how people can get up to £130 by making a simple change.

The Money Saving Expert explained in his latest newsletter how people could claim some free cash by switching their bank account.

The finance guru says banks stopped giving incentives throughout the pandemic - but many have reintroduced versions of the offer in recent weeks.

He said: "To get the cash you must usually be a new customer, pass a not-too-harsh credit check, and use the bank's official switching service. All accounts are available both as single and joint accounts."

Martin says bank switching services do all the work for you - and identifies that six major banks are promoting a deal.

Santander is offering the most upfront cash to join as customers can get a free £130 from switching accounts.

He explained: "As well as the free £130, with this account you pay a £2/mth fee and get cashback on bills paid by direct debit from it.

He continued: "You can get up to £5/mth in each of 3 percentage tiers: 3% for water, 2% energy, 1% council tax, mobiles, broadband, paid-for TV & Santander mortgages."

Nationwide is giving out £100 payments and the Money Saving Expert says this is a particularly appealing offer for those who are overdrawn.

He explained: "Nationwide's free switchers' £100 is across a range of accounts, but the standout is the fee-free Nationwide FlexDirect as it offers a year's 0% overdraft too - depending on your creditworthiness.

"So switch and use the £100 to reduce your overdraft, then work on getting rid of the rest of the debt within the year, as after it jumps to the same horrid 39.9% EAR that most banks charge."

Existing Nationwide members can boost this to £125 if they already have its FlexDirect, FlexAccount or FlexPlus account.

HSBC is offering customers a £140 sign-up incentive made up of £110 cash and a £30 voucher for Uber Eats or The Dining Out.

RBS and Lloyds banks are each offering £100 joining fees with additional rewards. RBS will give customers an additional £50 if you have stayed using their services after a year while Lloyds is offering a variety of freebies including cinema tickets.

Virgin Money is also offering an incentive but rather than cash they are offering an experience worth £150.
