Martin Lewis explains easy way to slash your broadband bills by hundreds a year

Consumer expert Martin Lewis has explained how households can save hundreds of pounds on broadband bills a year at the click of a button.

Speaking to viewers on Thursday's ITV Money Show, he told viewers: "Most of you are out of contract and are paying £35 to £40 a month - that adds up over £350 to £550 over a year.

"The way to get this cheap, I've said so many times before, is short-lived promo deals on comparison sites.

"Because existing customers are given access to all the tariffs, so how do they (companies) attract new customers?"

Martin Lewis said checking for flash promotions on comparison sites can bag some substantial savings for out-of-contract customers.

"They give you incentives on top of their cheapest tariffs and they put them on comparison sites so only people who are looking to switch properly get offered them," he said.

The consumer expert said there are two deals from Plusnet and TalkTalk coming into force on Wednesday, January 20.

New customers can claim a £50 prepaid card if they sign up to an 18-month contract with 10mb for £19 a month. The discount will bring the monthly price down to £16.20 a month.

TalkTalk offers a similar deal but with an £80 prepaid card for an 18-month contract with 67mb for a monthly cost of £24.

With the discount, customers will be paying about £19.90 a month.

Martin also suggested haggling for a cheaper deal.

"Switching usually nets you the cheapest prices, but if you are out of contract – or nearing the end – you could try to haggle your price," he explained.

"As there's stiff competition, companies are frantic to keep hold of customers. That is why in our polls on haggling with service companies, communication providers are frequently among the easiest to haggle with."

He said a survey in November showed that more than 80% of over 4,000 interviewees had success haggling with BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media.
