Martin Lewis' energy efficiency tips for homes could save £100s in cost of living crisis

With the cost of living crisis pushing prices up, Martin Lewis has held special section of his The Martin Lewis Money Show: LIVE tonight (Tuesday) focussing on energy efficiency. The money saving expert says that it's better for the environment and your pocket to make the best choices about energy in your home.

Taking viewers through the Get Your House In Order checklist, he started with the bathroom. Fitting a free water savings shower head from SaveWaterSaveMoney.co.uk can help reduce the water used in a shower.

He also noted that mixing hot and cold water to fill baths is a waste of money. With combi boilers, he says, you can lower the water temperature to around 55C, which will save energy.

In Martin's 'one degree challenge' he spoke about turning the heating down. The World Health Organisation says that 18C is a fine temperature for healthy adults, and Martin says reducing from 21C to 20C in the house could save 10%.

He added that if there are rooms which are unused, radiators should be turned off. He added that putting reflective panels behind radiators can help heat the room.

When it comes to boilers, he said a combi boiler could save £100 a year on gas bills. Martin directed viewers to MoneySavingBoilerChallenge.com to see what they could save.

On the hot water tank in your home, a £15 jacket to insulate could reduce heat loss by 75%, he said. Tumble dryers can also be expensive, at £1 a load, so he advises minimum use with a maximum load.

Windows are a prime place to reduce heat loss, and Martin suggests tactical - and fleece-lined - curtains. When it's sunny, keep them open, and when it's dark, close them.

He also advised viewers to turn 'draft detective', using sausage dog draft excludes in the house and even using cling film on windows if you feel a draft.

The Martin Lewis Money Show: LIVE is on Tuesdays at 8pm on ITV or you can catch up on ITV Hub
