Martin Keown urges Arsenal to complete transfer raid on Genk defensive pair

Martin Keown reckons Arsenal should sign Genks's central defensive pair - despite watching them conceded four goals to Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Central defence is an area Arsenal manager Unai Emery is looking to strengthen after seeing former captain Laurent Koscielny departed the club in the summer.

And Keown, the former Gunners defender, was impressed with Colombian duo Carlos Cuesta and Jhon Lucumi during their Champions League defeat in Belgium.

But the bold claim comes after Cuesta and Lucumi shipped four goals to their Premier League opponents.

Keown told BT Sport following Liverpool's 4-1 win: "(Cuesta) looks some player by the way, both Colombian central defenders look pretty decent.

"If I was an Arsenal scout - and never have been, never been asked to comment ever as a former player on prospective purchases - these two are not bad, I can tell you."

Arsenal are also reportedly weighing up a cut-price swoop for Red Bull Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano in January.

The Gunners made an approach for the RB Leipzig centre-back, 20, over the summer as Emery looked to bolster his back line.

However, the bid of around £40million for Upamecano was rejected, with the Bundesliga side reportedly holding out for a figure close to his full release clause of £82million.

Arsenal instead landed David Luiz from Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day but will likely look to add further depth to their defence in the near future.

And, given the young defender's current contract expires at the end of next season, The Sun has claimed that Emery will return with a £40m bid.

The Gunners are said to be keen to bolster their defensive ranks in January but are willing to wait until the summer to sign their No.1 target.

And Leipzig may well be forced to cash in on the contract rebel rather than lose him for free when his deal expires.
