Tottenham striker Harry Kane came in for some stinging criticism for his part in the opening goal on Sunday.
The England frontman won and scored a first-half penalty in north London during the 2-1 Premier League victory over Brighton.
Referee Graham Scott awarded Spurs a spot-kick just 13 minutes into the game after Kane had been upended by Adam Lallana.
It was a controversial call which Scott made with Match of the Day 2 pundits Martin Keown and Peter Crouch both agreeing Kane had made the most of the challenge.
Keown said both Kane and Scott had a moment to forget.
"Let's just say the referee’s had a really bad afternoon," said Keown. "Harry Kane, I believe he knows exactly what he’s doing.
"Spurs fans won’t like it but, for me, he looks at his opponent and knows what he’s going to do, so he tries to make a little back for Lallana to go over the top of.
"I think it’s dangerous play on Lallana but the referee doesn’t understand the game well enough.
"Harry Kane knows exactly what he’s doing and it’s dangerous play from him but he gets a penalty. It’s not even in the box, really."
Crouch, the former Tottenham striker, also admitted Kane was very clever in earning the spot-kick.
"Let’s be honest, Harry Kane knows what he’s doing," said Crouch.
"He’s looked at him twice and thought, if he can get his body in there, he knows Lallana’s going to jump and he’s potentially going to get a foul.
"He played him a little bit and Lallana only had his eyes on the ball.
"I do feel for Lallana a bit in that situation but Harry Kane has won a penalty."
