Martin Keown sends Gareth Southgate clear Bukayo Saka message after Scotland draw

Martin Keown has explained his surprise over the lack of football Bukayo Saka has played for England recently.

The Three Lions began their warm-up for Euro 2020 with a narrow 1-0 win against Austria at the start of June, with the Arsenal star scoring the only goal of the game at the Riverside, which was also his first strike for his country.

A few days later, Gareth Southgate 's side again won 1-0, this time against Romania in their last warm-up game before the major tournament, but Saka was not included in the squad.

The 19-year-old winger was then an unused substitute in England's 1-0 victory over Croatia as they kicked off their Euros campaign.

Against Scotland on Friday evening, Saka was not even in the match day squad and England laboured to a goalless draw at Wembley.

This means Saka has not played a single minute since his fine performance against Austria at the start of the month, something that has left former Gunners defender Keown baffled.

“I think he is a player that can make things happen,” said Keown on the ability of the English youngster.

“I’m a little bit surprised we haven’t seen more of him since his performance against Austria. He showed that he really had that cutting edge in that friendly. We’ll have to see what Gareth has got in mind, but there is such competition for places.

“There are five substitutes that the manager can make, so there will be opportunities to get everyone on. There are going to be occasions, and last night was one of them, where you’re going to have to go for it and play some of those really creative players all at once.”

Understandably, Arsenal fans were left rather unhappy with Saka's omission from the squad on Friday and took to Twitter to share their disappointment.
