Martin Keown has insisted Emiliano Martinez should remain Arsenal's number one goalkeeper for the 2020/21 season.
The Argentine goalkeeper was the Gunners' first-choice goalkeeper at the end of 2019/20 after Leno was ruled out for the season after sustaining an injury against Brighton in June.
Martinez's fantastic form has lead to speculation that he could leave the club in search of first-team football, with reports stating Arsenal are prepared to sell him for £20million, with Aston Villa and clubs in Spain interested.
However, the 27-year-old retained his place against Liverpool in the Community Shield and put in another impressive performance as the Gunners claimed a penalty shoot-out victory.
Martinez is determined to play week in, week out to boost his chance of being Argentina's number one but Keown believes he shouldn't leave Arsenal to achieve that and should be ahead of Leno in the pecking order.
“I think Martinez is my number one,” Keown told BT Sport when asked about who should be Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper.
“He is in possession of the place and he should keep it.
Before he continued: “I know Arsene Wenger thought this guy was going to be the number one never mind the number two coming in.
“He has always been considered a top goalkeeper.”
Fellow pundit Peter Crouch added on the debate: “How can he not be?
“He has not put a foot wrong at the end of last season and again today he’s made some good saves.
“You wouldn’t bet against him making a couple of penalty saves.”
