Martin Keown recalls time he confronted Arsene Wenger in Arsenal dressing room

Martin Keown has revealed he once confronted Arsene Wenger in the Arsenal dressing room after they had just won 3-0.

The former Gunners defender was renowned for having a hot temper, and was never one to shy away from a row.

And on this occasion he sought out Wenger, following Arsenal's victory at Charlton.

A Thierry Henry double and a strike from Freddie Ljungberg had given Arsenal a deserved victory away from home, but despite their thrilling performance, their boss did not seem that impressed.

Keown recalled to The Mail : "There was another time I had a word with Arsene Wenger, after we beat Charlton away in 2002.

Keown called out Wenger in the Arsenal dressing room (PA)

"I’d just come back from a broken leg and we battered them 3-0. The supporters are singing: 'It’s just like watching Brazil.'

"But we come back into the dressing room and the gaffer is totally quiet. He’s reading the programme. So I say: 'Boss, are you taking the p***?!'

"He says: 'What, Martin?' I say: 'What about a ‘well done’ or ‘that’s an incredible performance’.

"He looks up from his programme and starts laughing. Then he stands up and says: 'Martin, you are right! Well done everyone!'"

Keown went on to explain how Wenger would not often talk much in the dressing room after defeats either, for fear of saying something he might later regret, and would rather wait until he had watched the match back again.

Wenger has been out of management since leaving Arsenal in 2018, but is now working for FIFA as head of global football development.

Yet Keown has urged his old club to get Wenger back involved behind the scenes.

"Wenger was a visionary. He should be in the board room," Keown added.

"When I hear him talk, he still says ‘us’ and ‘we’. Have Wenger on the board and put his expertise to use."
