Martin Keown pinpoints how Arsenal let Matteo Guendouzi down in Watford draw

Martin Keown has slammed Arsenal for letting Matteo Guendouzi down against Watford.

The young midfielder was a key player for the Gunners but was forced under pressure after his teammates looked over reliant on playing through the young Frenchman.

This led the Hornets to put the pressure on, ultimately leading to their comeback.

Speaking on MOTD2, Keown said: "We have to remember that Arsenal had their opponent by the throat in the first half. They were architects of their own downfall.

"Trying to play and forcing it, almost like watching a development game and it isn't. This is a high end game.

"Guendouzi, the youngest player in the midfield, he's surrounded. They're playing straight balls to him. He can only really go backwards or side ways. They're converging on him. He takes forever to get the ball under control. Just play it out wide. Simple pass. But he panics, he turns and he loses it.

"Alarm bells must be ringing now. A senior player you're telling him miss this one out, we won't use you, but in the second half they continue to do the same thing.

"Half-time, [Watford] must have said get round him. Get round any players around the back.

"This is a blind pass across the goal [from Guendouzi]. Unbelievable. Brainless. You can't play football like that. Again, it was just giving Watford that license to get forward.

"Passing it out, where's [Guendouzi] going with it? Where can he go? Risk, reward. Tell me about game management. They're losing the ball, then they're having to defend and they're not getting tight enough. They don't work together as units.

"Kolasinac, are you a full-back? Get tight. Threaten the opposition. No pressure. It's far too easy. This team are bottom of the table, 2-0 at this point. Come up to the ball. This is what we worked about all of the time. Seems now they've lost their identity."
