Martin Keown outlines £250m Newcastle transfer 'dream' with Eddie Howe message before Arsenal

Martin Keown has admitted he is "dreaming" of seeing Newcastle buy five players at a combined cost of £250million in the January transfer window.

The Arsenal legend was in the BT Sport studio for coverage of the Magpies lunchtime clash away at his old club on Saturday.

And Keown opened up on the Newcastle takeover and what he believes would be a "dream" if Newcastle go out and buy five players during the January transfer window.

Plenty has been said around the Magpies takeover and how much they have to spend in January under new manager Eddie Howe.

Keown said: "They are in a perilous position, but there are still 78 points available to go for and I can't help but dream of a transfer window where supposing they buy five players at £50million a piece?

"These are incredibly wealthy owners at the helm of this football club."

But Keown believes Howe has to get the Magpies off the foot of the Premier League table and in a better position before the January transfer window opens to stand any chance of a big splurge paying off.

He added: "It's what they do between now and then.

"They're worth £350billion [the owners], they’re not going to sit around, they’ve not come to Newcastle to not spend money, but it's what he [Howe] does between now and Boxing Day, they've got to get some points on the board.

"If he rebuilds a news team in January, the likes of Burnley, Leeds looking over their shoulder, I expect that to happen. It's what happens between now and then though."
