Martin Keown names the Arsenal player Freddie Ljungberg must drop ahead of West Ham clash

Martin Keown has called on Arsenal's interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg to make a big decision over his defensive options, following the 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion last night (Thursday).

The Gunners lost out against Brighton at the Emirates Stadium, extending their winless run in all competitions to nine games to leave Arsenal ten points behind Chelsea in fourth place in the Premier League.

It was another disappointing result for the Gunners in Ljungberg's first home game since taking interim charge following the sacking of Unai Emery last week.

And Keown said that the defeat highlighted just how bad the club's current plight is, with Arsenal now sitting tenth in the Premier League and closer to the relegation zone than to the top four.

Arsenal 1-2 Brighton: Freddie Ljungberg full post-match press conference

“I think [Hector] Bellerin’s interview afterwards said it all, he said they didn’t really know what to say, and they looked lost," Keown told Talksport.

“When you are a manager, you impart your knowledge to the players, and you stitch in what you need, and each player is then serving a role you have encouraged them to.

“Bellerin looked lost, the team looked lost.

“I have to look at the previous manager [Emery], and realise it is even worse that we really realised.

"From the sideline he was very active, but you do your work within the week. You shouldn’t need to be ranting from the sideline, you should just need to make the odd adjustment. That was obviously a big problem."

And Keown believes that Ljungberg has to act decisively, with the former Arsenal defender naming the change he would make if he were in the Swede's shoes.

“Freddie [Ljungberg] either has to play a back three, or drop David Luiz," he said.

"I would take David Luiz out of the team, because he is dropping so deep.”
