Martin Keown lifts the lid on incredible row with Arsene Wenger over Arsenal contract stand-off

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has opened up on the astonishing chat he had with Arsene Wenger when trying to negotiate a new contract with the club.

Keown made over 300 Premier League appearances for the Gunners, winning the Premier League in 2002 and 2004 as part of the 'Invincibles' team.

However, the former Arsenal defender has claimed that Wenger accused him of being money-orientated after drawn-out talks over a new contract with the club.

Keown has revealed how he famously bit back at the Frenchman, insulted by the accusation given his affiliation and love for Arsenal.

"I had a chat with Wenger and I was kind of like 'how dare you talk to me in that way'," he told talkSPORT.

"We discussed about money and he said 'you've come in for another contract' and I said 'hang on, you've been here five minutes, I love this football club.

"'I came back, not for the money, I left because of money but I came back to toe the line, promises were made, of course, I'm back to speak to the chairman again.'

"Wenger was very good, he put us all in front of the board to sign a new deal but we couldn't agree properly, myself and Mr Dein [former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein], it was like trying to get blood out of a stone.

Unai Emery's pre-Southampton press conference

"We agreed if we won anything I would be back the next year, which was honest and fair. We won the double, I came back to pick up where we left off the year before and Wenger found out and thought I was only interested in money.

"I said 'hold off, I could've gone to other clubs, I came back to the club I love so don't tell me about loving a football club'. In the 22 years he did at the club there won't have been many who said that to him afterwards."
