Martin Keown launches scathing attack on Arsenal 'mentality problem'

Martin Keown has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal's 'mentality problem', calling on Freddie Ljungberg to instil more aggression and desire into his players.

Arsenal were held 2-2 by Norwich City on Sunday in their first game since manager Unai Emery was sacked last week, with former Gunners winger Ljungberg taking interim charge.

Ljunberg was unable to prevent his side from making it eight games without a win in all competitions, with Arsenal needing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to equalise twice in order to secure a point.

And former Gunners defender Keown , who was known for his tough, uncompromising style as a player, says his beloved Arsenal need some of the aggression he brought to the game.

"They are too passive. They are not aggressive," Keown said of the current Arsenal crop on MotD2.

"This is a mentality problem at the football club and there has been there for years, it has not just happened overnight."

"Arsenal have lost that stainless, that determination. They don't work together as a unit."

Keown recalled when Arsene Wenger first arrived at the club in 1996, at the beginning of a reign that was to last 22 years.

"When Wenger first came, there was a responsibility as a team," said the 53-year-old.

"They can be drilled to be better but there is a responsibility, they must want to do it."

Arsenal are searching for their next permanent manager, with Mikel Arteta and Brendan Rodgers the leading names in the frame.

But Keown said whoever takes charge on a permanent basis, for now the responsibility rests with his former teammate Ljungberg to instil a winning mentality into his players.

"That mentality has to change and it has to be done on the training pitch," said Keown.

"Freddie has to be able to do it. He was a diligent player but has to become that as a coach."
