Martin Keown explains Arsene Wenger's bizarre method of motivating Arsenal's title winners

Arsene Wenger rewrote the rule book on elite-level management when he arrived in the Premier League in 1996.

At the time, few predicted that the Frenchman would go on to spend 22 seasons in North London, guiding Arsenal to two league titles and into their new home, the Emirates Stadium.

In October, a new book by Wenger will hit the shelves in which he is expected to lift the lid on fresh details about how he sparked a revolution at Highbury.

And Arsenal hero Martin Keown has explained how one of his manager's unconventional methods left his teammates feeling simply the best on a match day.

Is Emile Smith Rowe the 10 to replace Mesut Ozil?

There were very few squabbles in the Gunners dressing room with one of the Premier League's very best, Thierry Henry, taking charge of the pre-match music - often pleasing his colleagues with a splash of Motown.

But as the team bus approached the stadium, Wenger would take control and play Tina Turner's 'The Best' as loudly as he could to leave his players feeling on top of the world.

And Keown says it really did work.

“He would have it booming out on the bus and we were bouncing," Keown told talkSPORT.

“Thierry Henry was the one who would always insist on taking charge of the dressing room music.

“He would always put on renditions of Michael Jackson. He did that on various occasions and he always knew that I liked it when he did that.

“But Arsene Wenger controlled the music as we arrived at the ground. That was something that he took charge of.

“In 1998 he would play ‘Simply the Best’ and he would always put it on as the coach was approaching the stadium for the away game or even the home game.

He added: “Honestly, it made us think that we were the best!”

Arsenal lost only five league games during 1998, at one stage winning a run of 14 from a run of 16 outings on their way to the Premier League title.

So thank you, Tina.
