Martin Keown delivers honest verdict on Mikel Arteta's tactical decision for Burnley vs Arsenal

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has praised Mikel Arteta's use of Thomas Partey during the game against Burnley.

The Gunners clinched all three points thanks to a wonderful free-kick from Martin Odegaard in the 30th minute following a foul on youngster Bukayo Saka.

The Norway captain curled the ball past the Burnley wall as goalkeeper Nick Pope stood no chance.

It proved to be the only goal of the game, giving the north Londoners their second successive 1-0 victory following their win over newly-promoted Norwich City last weekend.

Arsenal's defence showcased their ability to come out on top of physical battles, with Brazilian centre-half Gabriel producing a well-assured display, registering 10 clearances, two blocked shots and three tackles to help bring home all three points.

Keown was also impressed by Arteta's decision to utilise Partey as a lone defensive midfielder, allowing playmakers Emile Smith Rowe and Odegaard the freedom to create chances in the final third.

"The use of Partey was really intelligent today, getting him in front of the back four so he can compete", Keown said on BBC Match of the Day.

"Partey just sitting in front and then you can go and play your football with that base.

"If I had been in this back four today I would have wanted Partey challenging for that ball and then the central defenders can just mop up nicely.

"Ben White looking the part here because he is getting the best use out of the players in front of him."

Partey eventually came off for Ainsley Maitland-Niles with just over 15 minutes to play but Arteta confirmed that the Ghanaian was merely suffering from cramp.

In his post-match press conference, Arteta said: "He struggled at the end. He was cramping but that will come because he's missed a long time. He needs some fitness back."
