Martin Kemp's wife Shirlie feared he'd die from brain tumours that left them 'on the floor'

Martin Kemp and his wife Shirlie have opened up about the brain tumours he battled in the nineties.

The Wham! singer, 58, has admitted that she thought her husband, 59, would die, as he said they were "on the floor" while was sick.

Speaking on Wednesday's episode of This Morning, Shirlie said: "We kind of hid how bad Martin was.

"One of the hardest things mentally was knowing he had this huge brain tumour, having this huge operation where they removed part of his skull and put titanium plates in his head, and he had another tumour as well."

She added: "We didn't know what they were gonna do to save him."

Martin's illness came at a high point in his career when he was enjoying success with Spandau Ballet and his role as Steve Owen in EastEnders was coming up.

He said: "You never really know what's around the corner.

"Life was so good, life was on the up for me."

Martin added: "All of a sudden it came crashing down and within four or five years our life was on floor, and it was for us whether we could make it work and pick it up back again."

In 1995 he found a lump on the back of his head and an MRI scan discovered that he had two brain tumours.

The first tumour was just below his skull and was successfully removed in an operation.

But doctors thought it was too much of a risk to operate on the other, which was deep in his brain.

The couple looked into alternative treatments and discovered a non-invasive radiotherapy treatment that at the time was revolutionary.

Doctors managed to completely remove the tumour.
