Martin Jol delivers his verdict on Christian Eriksen and Tottenham after Bayern Munich humbling

Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol has opened up on his amazement as to why Christian Eriksen remains on the bench for Spurs.

The Danish international was one of Tottenham's standout stars last season, helping them to the Champions League final where they were defeated 2-0 by Liverpool in Madrid.

But following the defeat in June, Eriksen revealed his desire to leave the north London club during the summer transfer window.

Both Manchester United and Real Madrid were continually linked with the playmaker, but neither managed to secure a deal, but the former Ajax man could now leave the club on a free transfer this summer, and although Spurs are set to miss out on a huge transfer fee as a result, Jol believes that should not mean he is dropped from Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up, as he was for the game against Bayern Munich yesterday (Tuesday).

“There must be a problem because how good Spurs they over the past couple of seasons – they were unbelievable," the Dutchman told talkSPORT.

“If Christian Eriksen is on the bench you know you’ve got a problem. I know Christian as he made his debut with me at Ajax, and he is the engine… he is probably their best player.

“If you look at their style, Dele Alli is always playing well when Christian is there because he gives him the passes.

“They stretch defences with Kane, Son and Alli doing it, but if Christian is not there it won’t happen.

“I don’t know what happened; I think he wants to go.

“I said to Daniel [Levy] a couple of months ago when we were at the Ajax game in Amsterdam, ‘you should keep him!’

“But if he doesn’t want to stay you have to get on with the job with a new team with [Giovani] Lo Celso and hopefully he is the guy who can do that.

“I would play Christian all the time, even if he is going, because I want to play my strongest team.”
