Martin Freeman spotted filming new BBC drama in Merseyside

Martin Freeman has been spotted in locations across Merseyside filming for new TV police thriller The Responder.

Last week, the first image from the original new BBC drama The Responder currently being filmed in Liverpool was released.

But this wasn't the first time residents across Merseyside saw the actor in uniform as character Chris for the six-part series written by ex-Merseyside police officer Tony Schumacher.

Freeman, star of The Hobbit and The Office, was most recently spotted filming in Taylor Park in St Helens last week, but has also been at other locations in Everton and Wirral.

On social media, one resident in St Helens posted about the "excitement" on Wednesday when 'filming in progress' signs were placed across the popular park.

Martin Freeman in character as Chris, has been described by programme-makers as a crisis-stricken, morally compromised, unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool.

Whilst trying to keep his head above water both personally and professionally, Chris is forced to take on a new rookie partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo).

Both soon discover that survival in this high pressure, relentless, night-time world will depend on them either helping or destroying each other.

Martin Freeman said: "Tony Schumacher’s scripts were so unique and honest that I knew very quickly that I wanted to be a part of The Responder and take on the role of Chris. No-one writes like Tony and it has been exhilarating inhabiting the world he has created."

Tony Schumacher said: "My fantasy casting when I was writing the character of Chris in the Responder was Martin Freeman. Seeing that fantasy become reality is beyond exciting. Martin is one of the great British actors.

"He brings such a well of talent and humanity that breathes magic into the words I've been lucky enough to give him. I can’t wait for audiences to get to see his performance in this role, it’s one I feel very lucky to have had a front-row seat for.”

The Responder has secured funding and support from the Liverpool Film Office through the LCR Production Fund.

In January, the ECHO reported the new BBC Two comedy-drama was set to start filming on Lark Lane in February 2021.

The letter was delivered to local residents and businesses informing them about the upcoming filming for the new drama series.

In April, the BAFTA winner was in his uniform as he performed on Richmond Row in Everton.

An earlier this month, Meols was the latest location to be featured, as residents were alerted to filming, with production company Dancing Ledge reassuring people they would be adhering to all covid restrictions along Meols Parade and Bennetts Lane.
