Martin Freeman's ex Amanda Abbington fears split caused 'irreparable damage' to their kids

Martin Freeman’s ex Amanda Abbington has revealed that the pair's split could have caused "irreparable damage" to their kids.

The pair split in 2016 after 16 years together and the 47-year-old actress fears that the domestic trauma may lead their two children - Joe, 15, and Grace, 12 - to drink and drugs.

Amanda has spoke about the breakdown of her relationship to Martin, 49, and its effect on their kids and The Sun reports the actress saying: "Im sure I’ve given them irreparable damage and they will be going to therapy because of me and Martin at some point.

Speaking on Instagram in live session for the It’s OK mental health campaign, the actress explained that she wanted her kids to know that "there's nothing to be frightened of or ashamed of" no matter what they go through.

She has previously maintained that she has remained friends with the Sherlock star for the benefit of their kids.

The pair worked alongside each other on Sherlock and Martin had previously admitted filming was "no fun" during the couple's split.

However, Amanda confessed that although she had "bad days," she wouldn't hide them from their kids.

She said: "To hide this for my children, that I get depressed and I’m on antidepressants, what are you saying about all these mental health issues?

"Are you saying they’re offensive and shouldn’t happen? I don’t want that."

The actress, who starred in Billie Piper's I Hate Suzie, also revealed how distressing it was for her son to read death threats made to her online.

She admitted that it's easy for someone to make an anonymous account online to troll people and to "destroy people".

"If I hadn’t been in a stronger place when I was getting those tweets all the time, I don’t know what I’d have done," the Safe star said.

She went on to discuss how she never felt worthy for many years and didn't think she deserved a relationship.

Martin has also previously spoke about rules in place for their kids growing up. He told The Sunday Times last year that the couple made not smacking and not swearing the children two of the rules in their house.

Children's charity the NSPCC has called for a complete ban on smacking. The charity says it believes it only sets a bad example for children on how to deal with strong emotion.
