Martin Dubravka reveals details of his nightmare injury setback and how he trained through pain

Martin Dubravka has revealed he was injured during his summer break in Slovakia but aggravated the problem further during Newcastle United's pre-season training camp in York.

Speaking to Sport.SK in Slovakia, Dubravka has stated he has cracked a bone in his ankle and must return to his homeland as part of his recovery.

The injury to the goalkeeper caps a disastrous week in terms of injuries for Newcastle in York with Dwight Gayle also back in the treatment room with a knee injury.

Dubravka said: "During the penultimate run in Slovakia before leaving for preparation for England when I was fulfilling the set individual plan, I injured my ankle. I felt a sting or a half-rupture, respectively.

"I immediately informed the coaches in Newcastle. After arriving in England, I still trained, despite the pain, but after three days I had to stop.

"A scan revealed damage to the ligaments, and I've already had a small operation in Leeds.

"Immediately after it, I boarded a plane and went back home to Žilina. I will rehabilitate here for two weeks and then I will go to England again."

Dubravka admits he could be out for two months.

He went on: "I'll know more on it after two or three weeks when I put the brace away.

"Of course, I will still communicate with the club doctor and I will also inform him about how the procedures take place here in Slovakia.

"They injected me into the damaged area. Unfortunately, I have a crack there, which requires a break of about six to eight weeks.

"Of course, it is individual, it heals differently for everyone. I believe that despite the fact that I was still training after the injury, we caught it all early enough."

For Dubravka it brings an excellent run of performances to a temporary end after two years on Tyneside.

He said: "It's was unforeseen what I've done in the last two years. Of course, I still had injuries then, but not so seriously.

"Unfortunately, everyone is slowly getting older and in football, things like that happen.

"It's not pleasant and at the moment it limits me a lot but I try to stay positive.

"I don't feel too bad, I want to get back as soon as possible."
