Martin Dubravka praised by ex-England goalie but Newcastle fans will disagree with minor criticism

Martin Dubravka has been an 'inspirational signing' for Newcastle United.

That is the view of former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, although Magpies fans may disagree with the former Tottenham shot-stopper's assessment of Dubravka's ability with the ball at his feet.

Since joining Newcastle in January 2018 from Sparta Prague, the 32-year-old goalkeeper has been United's most consistent performer across his three-and-a-half years at the club.

And Dubravka displayed his talents on the global stage on Monday evening as he put in an assured display in Slovakia's impressive 2-1 win over Poland at EURO 2020.

And speaking prior to the game, Robinson waxed lyrical about Dubravka's performances on Tyneside.

"Dubravka has been an inspirational signing for Newcastle," Robinson told BeIN Sports.

"It was a problem area for them and he came in initially on loan, did really well, and they signed him at the first opportunity they had.

"It has not been an easy season, season and a half, for Newcastle but they stayed in the Premier League and he got Player of the Season which tells you a lot.

"He is a very, very good goalkeeper and at 32 he still has a lot of time left.

"He has developed in later years and has got a lot better since coming to the Premier League."

However, Robinson suggested Dubravka has struggled at times with the ball at his feet, although acknowledging he has improved in that department.

It is a criticism that will confuse Newcastle fans, particularly as one of Rafa Benitez's primary motivations for signing the Slovakian was his ball-playing ability.

"He comes for crosses and his distribution has improved," Robinson added.

"One thing that wasn't great was playing out from the back but since he has been at Newcastle that has improved.

"He dominates his box which I like. He is a big, tall goalkeeper and he is not afraid to come for crosses.

"What I like about him is when he does make a mistake it doesn't stop him the next time when he comes for a cross.

"If he makes a mistake, he continues to do the right thing. He is a really good goalkeeper and I like him."
