Martin Dubravka explains why he's 'happy' at Newcastle United after an ever-present season in goal

Martin Dubravka is "happy" at Newcastle United - and is delighted with how his first full season at the club panned out on a personal level.

The 30-year-old was the only ever-present in the Magpies side, starting all 38 of United's Premier League matches, and playing every minute of the 2018/19 campaign.

And, while Newcastle endured a difficult start to the season, during which they failed to win any of their first 10 games, United responded well after the turn of the year in order to record a 13th-placed finish.

Dubravka himself endured a few difficult moments - including mistakes which led to goals against Manchester United and Manchester City - but, for the most part, he was a consistent performer between the sticks for the Magpies.

"I'm happy. I've had one-and-a-half years here," Dubravka reflected upon his first full season at St James' Park.

"When I came here, I was a new player [to the Premier League], and now I've played the whole season. Obviously, I want to be in the goal for every game.

"I did not expect that I would be in goal every game. I was waiting for my chance, which came against Manchester United after one week. It was a great debut. I feel that the time has flown."

After enjoying a few weeks of rest at the end of the season, during which he has managed to recuperate from a few niggles he picked up last term, Dubravka has linked up with the Slovakia squad, who play a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

Once he has represented his nation, Dubravka will then take further time off in order to prepare himself for the start of pre-season with Newcastle.

Asked how he felt after being an ever-present in the side throughout the season, Dubravka replied with a smile: "Tired! Obviously, I'm very glad I could play every game. I appreciate it.

"I was coming to England as an unknown player. I'm glad that I could be part of a fantastic squad and fantastic dressing room.

"I'm glad, but obviously I was playing every game and some of the games for the national team, so I have a few injuries. It's good that I have a few weeks to rest."
