Martin Compston shares delight at Line of Duty being the biggest drama of 21st century

Line of Duty star Martin Compston asked his followers 'What was Nick Berry up to that week?' after looking at the Top Ten TV series of the decades.

Martin, who plays DC Steve Arnott in the award-winning police drama, was celebrating the fact that Line of Duty has topped the viewing figures of TV series over the last decade.

The show got 15.24 million viewers for its finale, and Martin jokily expressed his surprise that the runner-up show in the ratings was a 2000 episode of Heartbeat which got 15.16 million viewers.

Showing fans a picture of the show's record breaking ratings, Martin tweeted: "Being the biggest drama of the 21st century is amazing but like most folk I’m wondering what the bold Nick Berry was up to that week in Heartbeat."

He added: "Thanks again for the support never in our wildest dreams did we think the show would reach this many viewers."

Martin also said proudly of the news: "Now we’re sucking diesel"

Other series on the top ten list included episodes of A Touch of Frost, Bodyguard, Inspector Morse, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Aug Wiedersehen, Pet and The Royal.

Fans were quick to come back to Martin with one literally answering his question about Nick and the episode in question.

The follower wrote: "Apparently it was this episode, I can only assume it was raining that day! And congratulations sir, very well deserved. #LineofDuty6."

The episode in question was from the 6 February 2000 and called "Against the Odds".

A synopsis of that episode read: "A man dies one week after changing the beneficiary of his will from his nephew to his boarders, incensing the former and surprising the latter.

"A council planning officer drums up support for an industrial estate near Aidensfield, but Blaketon is uncertain."

Martin wasn't the only one to speak of the show's incredible ratings.

Jed Mercurio also wrote: "We're honoured and flattered by the viewing figures for #LineofDuty6. We knew attempting to explore the real nature of corruption in our society wouldn't appeal to everyone, but we do sincerely thank you all for watching.

"It's been our privilege to share your Sunday nights."
