Martin Compston laughs at England fan who said he 'cheered when Steve Arnott got thrown down the stairs'

Martin Compston has shared a cheeky tweet from an England fan who said he 'cheered when Steve Arnott got thrown down the stairs'.

The Line of Duty actor has been reposting a series of brazen tweets he received on his timeline this week which has left fans in stitches.

Scot Martin who plays English copper Steve Arnott in the BBC drama, shared a tweet from Sky News which read: "England are set to play Italy on Sunday under the same weather conditions as the 1966 team which won the World Cup, the Met Office has said."

After posting it Scotland fanatic Compston wrote: "Aye but goal line technology is in operation these days."

And one England fan replied to Martin, unhappy with his response, he said: "I cheered when Steve Arnott got thrown down the stairs."

Seeing the funny side, the actor from Greenock said: "Decent (laughing emoji)".

But his fans stood up for him in the comments.

One wrote: "I’ll cheer when Italy wipe the floor with England tonight."

Another added: "ye do know that Steve arnot is a fictional character or do u ??? Either way it wasnt getting thrown down stairs so."

While one said: "Wee bit awkward given that Steve is English?"

Earlier this week, Compston joked the Euro 2020 final would end in tragedy if it was a plot line on Line of Duty.

The 37-year-old has been a vocal supporter of the Scottish National Team throughout the competition and couldn't resist imagining the fall out if the Euros played out on the award winning drama.

The Detective Inspector Steve Arnott actor reckoned his Northern Irish colleague Ted (played by Adrian Dunbar) would clash over the final scores.

And that ultimately, guns would be used if the phrase 'It's coming home' were to be used repeatedly.

After one person asked online if Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio could write a seventh season should England win on Sunday, Martin decided to imagine the script in his head.

He wrote: "Would end in tragedy. Hastings shooting Steve after the gobs***e said “Gaffer it came home” one too many times."
