Compston plays Craig Burke, a navy officer, who seemingly suffers a cardiac arrest and is pronounced dead shortly after.

Suzanne Jones plays DCI Amy Silva, who is heading the investigation into the suspicious death whilst dealing with an unhelpful navy crew.

Fans were saddened by the passing of their favourite actors character, and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

One user writing: "I am watching #Vigil purely for Martin Compston and he dies within the first 8 minutes, I haven’t been this upset since this Line of Duty finale."

Another joked: "BBC: New Martin Compston drama, starring Martin Compston #Vigil, with Martin Compston. Vigil: *Martin Compton dies in the first 10 seconds of the episode*."

A third user agrees: "Did they really kill of @martin_compston in the first 10 minutes after a big social media focus on him? #Vigil"

Some fans appreciated the risk the drama took with killing off a fan favourite's so early on.

One fan wrote: "#vigil #Vigilbbc @martin_compston and Suranne Jones - wonderful brilliant acting, great storyline, massive balls to do *that* in the first 15 minutes. Can’t wait for episode two."

Another agreed: It's Monday night in Australia and just watched #Vigil only because @martin_compston is in it. OK the rest of the cast are great too. No spoilers but it's a full throttle drama, can't wait for episode 2 tomorrow, wouldn't recommend if you get claustrophobic though."

A third fan agreed: "@martin_compston We nearly turned Vigil off after you copped it in the first 5 minutes. But we persevered and glad we did. Five star series!"

Despite the shock death it is unknown if Compston will continue to appear throughout the show in a series of flash backs as the drama unfolds.

The six part drama will continue on BBC1 on Bank Holiday Monday at 9pm.
