Martin Clunes' famous wife: Who is Philippa Braithwaite? Doc Martin couple's long marriage and life away from screens

Although Martin Clunes is the most famous face of Doc Martin, having starred as the lead character since the series began in 2004, he is not the only member of his family to work on the show. Martin has a famous wife Philippa Braithwaite who is a successful TV producer who worked in this role for Doc Martin.

Both Martin and Philippa are appearing in the Doc Martin documentary Farewell Doc Martin which looks back at the 10 series of the show. Farewell Doc Martin will air on Thursday, December 29 at 8.30pm on ITV1.

Philippa was the producer for every series of Doc Martin since it began and has also produced other shows for her husband including the ITV drama Manhunt and Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific. The couple have been married 25 years since 1997, with Martin proposing in Hawaii.

They met the same year that Martin divorced his first wife, actress Lucy Aston, and they like to keep their relationship and personal life private. Martin and Philippa, who currently live on a 130-acre farm in Dorset, met through work and had a small marriage ceremony in London.

The couple have one child together, Ellie, who starred in an episode of Doc Martin when she was younger but now has found an equestrian career. In previous interviews Martin has said that he and Philippa enjoy working together and he is happiest when she is by his side.

Speaking ahead of Farewell Doc Martin airing Philippa said that although Martin is not a real doctor he still tries to give people medical advice. She said: “If someone is on antibiotics Martin will ask what they have been given, and we have to say to him’ you are not a doctor!’”

She spoke about the story of when they were in Paris and a group of women were on segways and one had a nasty accident when she crashed into a wall. “Martin turned into an action man and went flying over to see if she was OK. She was semi-conscious, looked up at him and said ‘It’s Doc Martin’."
