Martin Boyle's Hibs release clause explained and why Aberdeen bid could be booted out

Martin Boyle does have a £500,000 release clause in his Hibs contract.

But Aberdeen ’s half-a-million-bid for the Australian international doesn’t trigger it because it only applies to clubs outwith Scotland.

Boyle penned a contract extension at Easter Road back in August 2020, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2023.

Boyle had been linked with moves away from the HIbees prior to that as he entered the final year of his deal.

Celtic and Stoke City were credited with an interest in the former Dundee wide man, but after two serious knee injuries and starting a young family in Edinburgh, Boyle is happy in green and white and has no desire to up sticks at the first sign of transfer interest.

However, that doesn’t mean the 28-year-old isn’t gettable for certain clubs.

The latest extension to his contract included a half million release clause, that means Hibs are obligated to let Boyle speak to any club from England or abroad that meets that valuation.

That led to some confusion, with Aberdeen fans querying why the Hibees were able to knock back their bid.

But sporting director Graeme Mathie can request whatever fee Hibs deem appropriate from Scottish clubs.

Boyle spoke on his future ahead of last season’s Scottish Cyup final, insisting he couldn’t rule anything out but reiterated how much he was enjoying life in Leith.

He said: “I’ve two years left and whatever happens, happens.

“If something comes of it then something comes of it, but my full focus is on Saturday.

“I’d just have to see what the opportunity was and weigh it up. I’ve never been in that position before, but I’m sure if it was brought to my attention, then it’s something I’d weigh up with family and the club then take it from there.

“I haven’t really thought about it. I can’t describe how much I’m enjoying my football here.

Some people might say that money is everything, but actually happiness is everything.

“I’m really enjoying my football here, my family are settled here and I committed to another two years here.

“I could have just seen out my contract, but I think there is a lot to be said for being happy. That’s the kind of guy I am.

“I am happy, I’m playing football regularly and enjoying it.

“I’m in a position where I’ve had a really good season and whatever happens will happen.”
