Martin Boyle Rangers and Celtic transfer question posed by ex-Manchester United coach impressed by Hibs winger

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen is surprised that Martin Boyle is still at Hibs and not Rangers or Celtic.

The Easter Road winger was linked with a move to Celtic last January, as well as English Championship outfit Stoke City in the summer for a mooted fee of around £1.5million.

Having helped Boyle come on leaps and bounds as a player while managing him in the capital, Neil Lennon is a long-term admirer.

Jack Ross has him for keeps now though unless a mega bid arrives, after Boyle committed his future to the Hibees in the summer, penning a three-year extension to his contract.

The former Dundee man hasn’t hit the heights he did last season, but was a thorn in Celtic’s side at the weekend, winning a penalty in Hibs’ 2-2 draw with the Champions.

Meulensteen has seen the wide man up close while away with the Socceroos, and has questioned why Scotland’s big two haven’t made a serious offer for him.

"I’m actually surprised that a club like Celtic or Rangers haven’t come in for him because he’s got so much to offer and is doing really well for Hibs right now,” he told the Daily Record.

"Martin’s great - he’s full of beans, hard-working, quick, agile and direct.

"He’s got something special about him, he’s not afraid to run at people and has a heart like a lion.

"Martin has had a few injury setbacks, but personality-wise he never stops smiling. He’s a good guy and a very good player."

Boyle has made no secret of how happy he is with the Leith club however, especially after they stuck by him through two serious knee injuries within the space of a year.

Wife Rachel plays for the women’s team, and with five years service under his belt already, it looks like both Rangers and Celtic have missed any chance they might have had of signing Boyle.
