Martin Bashir ‘must face questions over Princess Diana TV interview’

Journalist Martin Bashir “needs to come forward” to answer questions about his controversial Princess Diana interview, according to the graphic designer who drew up fake bank statements for him.

Matt Wiessler said Bashir had not told him what the forged documents were being used for.

Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, claims Bashir showed them to him, saying they proved courtiers were selling stories about his sister in order to gain his confidence and get access to her.

Last night ITV broadcast the first part of a documentary about the 1995 interview. Wiessler claimed he had been made a scapegoat by the BBC who refused him further work while Bashir returned as a senior journalist.

He told Radio 4’s Today Programme: “The person that needs to come forward is Martin Bashir. He’s apparently too ill to speak to anyone now. He’s the only one who has the answers.”

The BBC has pledged to “get to the bottom” of the controversy around the interview where the princess, below, told Bashir there were “three people” in her marriage — a reference to Prince Charles’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. Bashir has had quadruple heart bypass surgery and Covid-19.
