This genus of evergreen flowering plants (in the orchid family) is an ideal pick for its natural beauty and straightforward care instructions – so it's unsurprising they're so sought-after among those in the know.
'Using orchids as decorative floral displays, as Martha Stewart does, is a great way to create a statement in any room, particularly in the colder and darker months of the year when flowers are in short supply,' says H&G's Gardens Content Editor Thomas Rutter, who notes that cymbidium orchids are well known for producing stems full of magnificent blooms throughout the winter months.
When it comes to caring for the orchids, there are a few key steps, but overall, it's a highly manageable flower to maintain.
'They prefer bright but indirect light and enjoy a warm spot indoors,' Thom says. 'Always allow water to drain away from the container to avoid root rot. One trick to encourage more blooms in subsequent years is to give your cymbidium orchid a summer vacation, placing it outside during the warmer months.
The orchid's color variety is also a highlight for those looking to utilize arrangements as home decor with existing color palettes. Options include bright whites, pinks, and yellows.
