Martha Stewart's rare stone lion statue teaches us a lesson in antique styling – it's an unorthodox way to enliven a room

Martha Stewart.

Decorative objects are not to be undermined when it comes to styling a room. While function is certainly important in terms of furniture, objects like statues and figurines, particularly antique ones, can add unique character to a space.

Case in point: Martha Stewart's home, which features a stone lion statue, as seen on her Instagram page.

Decorating with antiques , like Martha's statue, takes patience, precision, and strategic styling, but with the right methods, you can start naturally including bold pieces in your home.

According to experts, introducing antique objects into a common area of the home, such as the living room, is a fantastic way to add a focal point into a space.

'Embracing antiques in a living room space is a wonderful way to bring in character, history, and charm,' explains interior designer Rebecca Hughes. 'As a studio, we love pairing pieces from various periods together, curating a mix of antiques with more contemporary design pieces. The living room, as the central hub of the home, should be a warm and inviting space. Incorporating antiques into a space is a wonderful way to achieve this feel.'

One of the beauties of decorating with antiques is that their value only increases in time, and since they are often made of durable materials, they are likely to become heirlooms in the home.

'Unlike modern, more disposable items, antiques possess a unique quality that often becomes more beautiful over time,' Rebecca explains. 'This is especially true for ornamental antique sculptures and figurines, which bring added character and appeal to a living room.''

Rebecca also recommends bringing these items into the kitchen, where common antique materials such as metals and glass thrive.

'In a kitchen that acts as the heart of the home, antique trinkets such as copper kettles or earthenware vases bring a wonderfully warm and cozy feel to the space,' she suggests.

'We also use antiques in kitchens to help soften the space. Often kitchens can be quite clinical, but an antique jug or battered chopping board can authentically add character.'

Whether you're looking to add some character to a cozy corner or simply want to start collecting vintage decor, you can't go wrong with a small trinket to start.
