Feb. 04--He just went so he wouldn't be fined, and it worked.
Seattle Seahawks star running back Marshawn Lynch met his media obligations in the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIX, the NFL confirmed to the Los Angeles Times.
His meetings with the press may have been short -- not a second over the mandated five minutes -- but they were arguably the most memorable.
Lynch simply repeated the phrase "I'm just here so I won't get fined" over and over. Occasionally he would give shout-outs. But, for the most part, that was it.
Lynch was also able to avoid fines for the hat he wore during his media appearances, which was an official "Beast Mode" product. The hat was made by NFL licensee New Era and was in the Seahawks' colors, so there were no rules broken, NFL spokesman Michael Signora said in an email.
Lynch is not a fan of the media, according to his mother, so he does not like talking to reporters -- ever.
But, the thing is, players are required to talk to the media, and Lynch was slapped with a $100,000 fine this season for giving reporters the cold shoulder.
Once that happened, Lynch began answering reporters' questions with one-word responses, like "Yeah."
Lynch's agent could not be reached for additional comment.
