Marsh all but gives up on Test recall

Veteran batsman Shaun Marsh concedes his international career is all but over after missing selection for Australia's first Test against India.

The classy left-hander was casually thrown into the mix for the Adelaide day-night Test series opener due to Australia's troubles at the top of the order.

David Warner's groin injury, an out-of-form Joe Burns, and rising star Will Pucovski's concussion put Australia's batting plans into tatters.

It led to Australian legend Allan Border calling for Marsh to fill the gap at the top despite the 37-year-old not having played for his country since January 2019.

Selectors ultimately opted to stick with Burns and shift Matthew Wade up the order to fill Warner's spot.

Marsh says he never received a call from Australian coach Justin Langer, nor did he expect to.

"There was a few funny videos (about a potential recall) getting thrown around, I got a few from a few of my mates from back home," Marsh said.

"I'm 37 now and haven't played for a few years, in Test cricket.

"I wasn't expecting a phone call and I'm pretty comfortable with where I'm at in trying to play well for the (Melbourne) Renegades (in the BBL) over the next six weeks and getting back to WA after that."

Marsh has been one of Australia's most polarising cricketers of recent years.

As good as any batsmen in the world when in form, Marsh has also endured some horror slumps while in the Test team, leading to selectors losing patience with the talented West Australian.

He has scored 2265 runs at an average of 34.31 from 38 Tests for six centuries.
