Marseille Sacks Manager Gattuso After Disappointing League Performance

Gattuso sacked after 1-0 loss to Brest. Jean-Louis Gasset appointed interim manager.

Marseille manager Gennaro Gattuso has been sacked after five months in charge, as confirmed by a source with direct knowledge of the decision. Following the dismissal, Jean-Louis Gasset, a former assistant coach at Paris Saint-Germain who recently left his role with Ivory Coast during the Africa Cup of Nations, has been appointed as the interim manager until the end of the season.

The decision to remove Gattuso came swiftly after Marseille's 1-0 defeat to 10-man Brest in the league, a loss that dealt a blow to the club's aspirations of securing a spot in a European competition for the upcoming season. In a postmatch news conference, Gattuso acknowledged the team's struggles, stating, 'We've hit rock bottom. When you hit rock bottom, you have to take responsibility. It's my responsibility. There is nothing else to say.'

With Marseille currently sitting in ninth place in the standings after 22 matches, trailing league leaders PSG by a significant 23 points, the club has initiated legal proceedings to part ways with Gattuso. Additionally, Marseille is actively seeking a new permanent manager to lead the team forward.

The abrupt departure of Gattuso marks a significant development in Marseille's season, prompting a period of transition and reevaluation for the club as they aim to improve their standing in the league and regain stability in their performance on the pitch.
